A Guide to Legrand USB Solutions: 2.0, 3.0 and Mobile Device Cables

USB continues to evolve and will soon become one of our most powerful connectivity technologies, driving some of the most profound changes in mobile integration the communications industry will ever see.

A few weeks ago we began discussing the wide variety of USB connectivity solutions from C2G, a group brand of Legrand North America. This week we're taking a closer look at some of the most popular USB 2.0, SuperSpeed 3.0 and Mobile Device cable solutions.

USB 2.0 Cables

Legrand standard A/B USB cables support all USB 1.1 and 2.0 devices. They are available in 1-meter, 2-meter, 3-meter and 5-meter lengths in either black or white. 2-meter and 3-meter cables are also available in blue, green, orange, purple , and red to facilitate color-coding connections in complex installations. Legrand standard USB cables feature 24AWG copper construction with a foil and braid shield to protect against EMI/RFI and are a great value and are the perfect choice for most installations.

Legrand standard USB A/B cables are available in a right angle configuration to help with installations in the tight spaces found in technical furniture and racks. USB 2.0 Right Angle A/B cables have a black jacket and performance identically to the straight USB cables in the standard line. They can be had in 1-, 2-, 3-, and 5-meter lengths.

A special 6-foot USB 2.0 One B Male to Two A Male Y-Cable is available for those installations where specialized devices demand more power than one USB port can provide. For products such as a portable 2.5in hard drive, you plug this cable's USB B end into the device, and then plug the two USB A ends into two open USB ports on one PC or Mac. This cable then pulls power from both USB ports, and can increase the output to the external drive.

A cable built to higher performance standards and featuring an ultra-flexible is available with gold-plated connectors to deliver maximum conductivity and performance. Available in 2-meter and 5-meter lengths, Legrand Ultima™ USB cables are charcoal gray.

USB for Mobile Devices

Legrand has a series of cables designed just for charging or powering devices. Featuring an extremely flexible, lightweight design, these cables do not transfer data, but are ideal for connecting devices like a Google Chromecast, Amazon FireTV or even the state-of-the-art RapidRun Optical interconnect to a USB power supply. The USB charging cable is available in 1.5-foot length. I used three of them to connect 3 small tablets to a stand-alone 4-port powered hub to create a multi-device USB charging station in my living room.

There is also a unique dual-charging configuration that can support two devices charging from a single port (think USB charging port in your car). Legrand also offers a 1-meter USB A Male to Lightning Male sync and charging cable, in black or white, for connecting a so-equipped Apple iPhone or iPad to your USB network.

Traditional USB 2.0 Male to Micro USB B Male cables are available in 0.3-meter, 1-meter, 2-meter, and 3-meter, lengths and are designed for all of your desktop connectivity needs. The 0.3-meter length is particularly useful for connecting a table or cell phone to the Legrand Adorne® under-cabinet lighting system, for example.

SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Cables

USB SuperSpeed cables are far more complex than USB 2.0 connections. They deliver more power and operate at much faster speeds. Most installations will benefit from using a USB 3.0 link from the host computer to a USB 3.0 hub, even if all products lower in the USB network are USB 2.0 performance limited. USB 3.0 is a more powerful connection that is about the same price, but offers backwards and forwards compatibility for a more flexible desktop environment. USB 3.0 A Male to B Male cables are available in 1-meter , 2-meter , and 3-meter lengths.
